Readiness signs
- Nap 3 is a fight most days, or only works as a short car/pram nap
- Bedtime is drifting past 8:30–9:00 pm because of the third nap
- Baby can happily stay awake ~2.5–3 hours in the afternoon without meltdown
- Morning and midday naps are solid (~1 hour+ each) on most days
- Early bedtime (6:30–7:00 pm) after a skipped nap 3 still yields a decent night
Week plan
Days 1–2
Stretch the afternoon, keep an early bed
Keep naps 1 and 2. Skip forcing nap 3. Aim bedtime 30–60 minutes earlier than usual (often 6:30–7:15 pm). Expect a slightly longer night or an early morning — that is normal while sleep pressure recalibrates.
Days 3–4
Lengthen wake windows gradually
Push the morning wake window toward ~2.5 hours and the midday window toward ~2.75–3 hours if cues allow. Cap nap 2 by ~3:00–3:30 pm so the evening window is not endless.
Days 5–6
Stabilise two solid naps
Protect nap 1 as the day’s anchor. If nap 1 is short, bring nap 2 slightly earlier rather than adding a third nap by default. Use early bedtime as your rescue tool.
Day 7
Review and choose your default
If evenings are calmer and nights are holding, lock in the 2-nap day. If meltdowns dominate and bedtime is before 6:30 pm every night, alternate a micro nap 3 / early-bed day for another week — readiness may need more time.

FAQ
- When should I drop from 3 naps to 2?
- Most babies are ready between about 7 and 9 months, when nap 3 regularly fights, bedtime runs late, and two longer naps can cover day sleep. Readiness beats the calendar — some settle earlier, some later.
- What if my baby is exhausted on 2-nap days?
- Bring bedtime earlier for a week rather than forcing a full third nap that delays night sleep. A 10–20 minute bridge nap in the pram is a temporary bridge, not a permanent third nap.
- How long does the 3 to 2 nap transition take?
- Often 1–3 weeks of mixed days. Expect some early mornings and short evenings while wake windows lengthen. Consistency on nap 1 and early bedtime shortens the rocky phase.
