Six months sits on the edge of the 3-to-2 nap transition. Many babies still need three naps some days and two on others. This cornerstone covers wake windows, solids timing, and when to lean into two naps with earlier bedtime.

2 naps vs 3 naps at 6 months

Day sleep often lands around 2.5–3.5 hours with night sleep near 10–12 hours. Wake windows typically span 2–3 hours.

If nap 3 fights start and bedtime runs late, move toward 2 naps with longer afternoon windows. Mixed weeks are normal. Full transition guide: /baby-sleep-schedule/3-to-2-nap-transition.

Solids without wrecking nights

Offer iron-rich foods by day (lentils, fortified cereals, soft meats or alternatives as advised) and keep milk timing so night sleep is not disrupted by experimental late meals.

Finish the last solid feed well before wind-down to reduce reflux-related wakes. Follow your pediatrician on starting solids.

Teething vs schedule

Teething can disrupt nights — hold schedule by day and use pediatric-approved comfort at night. Avoid permanently shifting bedtime later "just for teeth."

If wakes surge with new skills, practise by day and keep one calm settling method.

Busy households

Warm evenings and joint-family noise can delay melatonin. Dim the sleep space and keep the last 30 minutes quieter even if the rest of the home is lively.

Agree the nap-3-or-early-bed rule with every caregiver so one person is not renegotiating nightly.

7-day 6 months sleep reset

One change per day. Do not add new gadgets or methods mid-week — hold the plan.

  1. Day 1 — Baseline

    Log, don't fix

    • Log whether you used 2 or 3 naps and what bedtime resulted.
    • Note solids timing vs night wakes.
    • Choose a bedtime target (7:00–8:00 pm).
  2. Day 2 — Protect naps

    Morning anchor

    • Steady morning wake.
    • Morning window ~2–2.5 hours.
    • Protect nap 1 length.
  3. Day 3 — Midday stability

    Key nap of the day

    • Midday window ~2.5–3 hours.
    • Protect nap 2.
    • Decide by 3:30 pm: nap 3 or early bed.
  4. Day 4 — Bedtime

    Same sequence every night

    • Same wind-down sequence every night.
    • Finish solids well before lights out.
    • Hold one settling response.
  5. Day 5 — Protect bedtime

    Trim or rescue

    • If nap 3 delayed bedtime, skip it tomorrow and bed earlier.
    • If evenings explode on 2 naps, shorten the last window.
    • Do not add a late solid experiment this week.
  6. Day 6 — Hold steady

    No new tactics

    • Repeat the 2-vs-3 decision rule for two more days.
    • No new training methods mid-week.
    • Track longest night stretch.
  7. Day 7 — Review

    Adjust one variable

    • If ready to drop nap 3 most days, follow /baby-sleep-schedule/3-to-2-nap-transition.
    • If nights worsen, check last window length first.
    • Free assessment if you want a personalised plan.
